how to take care of coily hair

Coily/kinky hair is a unique and beautiful hair texture that requires special care and attention.  It is often referred to as type 4 hair in the Andre Walker hair typing system and its tight coils and zigzag patterns make it prone to dryness, tangling, and breakage. However, with the right knowledge and a consistent hair care routine, you can unlock the full potential of your coily/kinky hair. In this guide, we will explore essential tips and techniques to help you maintain healthy, moisturized, and vibrant hair.

It's important to analyze the state of your hair before developing a hair routine, the pattern alone isn't the main component to build off of, things like texture, density, and porosity also play a big part in routine hair care. If your hair is healthy you can start with general routine care. However, if it is damaged it's best to start a routine designed to repair that damage. If you feel overwhelmed or unsure about how to care for your hair it's always best to see a hair professional for guidance or to address your specific concerns.

Cleansing

Coily/kinky hair should be washed regularly to remove product buildup and keep the scalp clean. However, it's important to choose gentle cleansing methods to avoid stripping the hair of its natural oils. Shampoos containing harsh sulfates can be drying, so opt for sulfate-free or mild shampoos instead. Consider co-washing (using conditioner instead of shampoo) or using a cleansing conditioner for a gentler cleanse. When washing, focus on the scalp and roots, and let the water and cleanser run through the length of your hair, avoiding vigorous rubbing or scrubbing.

Conditioning

After cleansing don't skip your conditioner as it helps to smoothen the cuticles of your hair and lock in moisture. It should be the final step of your in-shower wash routine. Choose a conditioner that works with your hair's texture, density, and porosity, and ensure that you work it into the ends of your hair properly. This is also the best time to detangle your hair, begin detangling from the ends, and gradually work your way up to the roots. Be patient and avoid rushing through the process to minimize breakage.

Treating

Treatments are a vital step in caring for coily/kinky hair. Regular treatments can help restore moisture, strengthen the hair, and improve its overall health. Look for treatments or hair masks that target your specific concerns or needs whether it is dryness, breakage, or split-ends etc.

Moisturizing

One of the most important aspects of coily/kinky hair care is maintaining adequate moisture. This hair type has a natural tendency to be dry due to its structure, which makes it challenging for sebum (the scalp's natural oil) to travel down the hair shaft. Regular moisturizing is crucial to keep your hair soft and prevent breakage. Use water-based moisturizers or leave-in conditioners to provide moisture to your hair. Additionally, incorporating natural oils like coconut oil, jojoba oil, or shea butter can help seal in moisture and nourish your strands.

Styling

Because this hair type is prone to a lot of dryness and breakage it's important to do styles that are low manipulation. Always ensure before styling, that your hair is well moisturized to help prevent any damage. Even when you have your hair styled don't neglect it you can add moisture/nutrients throughout the day using a hydrating hair mist or spray to help replenish it.  Avoid using heat styling tools frequently as they can lead to damage and frizz. Instead, embrace air-drying or opt for diffusing to dry your hair without disrupting your pattern. To help further maintain the integrity of your hair you can switch out non-silk or non-satin pillowcases, headscarves, and scrunchies for silk/satin ones.

With consistency, a good diet, and a personalized routine, you can achieve your hair goals. It can be overwhelming at times and a lot to remember but having a hair routine/planner helps keep you organized. Take the time as well to really get to know your other hair characteristics such as porosity and density etc and when in doubt consult a professional.

All the best on your hair journey ✨
