How to moisturize hair!

Dry hair develops when your hair doesn't get or retain enough moisture, the ability of one's hair to absorb or retain moisture is known as porosity, this is determined mainly by genetics but other factors (chemical treatments and heat) play a big part in this! Now we all know moisturizing is essential to healthy hair but how do you know if you are moisturizing correctly or often enough? Our first step is to know our hair porosity, you need to know how well your hair retains moisture so you don’t over or under-moisturize.

You can test the porosity of your hair by taking a few strands of clean hair (without product build-up) and letting it sit in a bowl of water for a few minutes if your hair sinks to the bottom it has high porosity if it floats it has low porosity, this isn't the most reliable method but it's a good place to start.  Another way to test is to apply water droplets on to clean hair, if it beads up you have low porosity if it absorbs easily you have high porosity.

High Porosity:

If you have high porosity hair, it usually means your cuticles are raised/ filled with gaps ready to receive moisture and let it go all at the same time, leaving you with hair that tends to get frizzy easily when the humidity is high and become brittle and lifeless when it is low. It is important to keep in mind when moisturizing hair with high porosity that you need to seal in the moisture that you put in, less you be moisturizing in vain.

The problem is not being able to moisturize, your hair is ready waiting, crying out for moisture. The problem is the cuticle, it’s open and filled with gaps and just as easy as anything can get in so it can get out. The best way to start is with a reconstructive treatment like a protein treatment to help strengthen the strands or a treatment that rebuilds from within on a molecular level, this is not to moisturize but to aid in moisture retention in the long run. To moisturize effectively wash and deep condition or use a hair mask weekly, when rinsing out the deep conditioner please do not use warm water, as nice as it may feel it will simply remove everything you have done for the past 30 - 60 minutes.

Rinse out the deep conditioner with cool water which will remove excess product without stripping away all the moisturizing ingredients. To further seal it all in, pour an apple cider vinegar rinse  all over your strands let it sit for a couple of minutes then rinse again with cool water, ACV is acidic and helps to restore the ph balance in hair.

Low Porosity:

This means your cuticles are closed and flat having a hard time absorbing moisture but good at retaining it! So to effectively moisturize you need to use products that penetrate the cuticle (not open it, there will be no opening up of the cuticle) so that it can get the moisture it needs. Keep in mind product buildup is always around the corner as nothing is getting into that hair cortex easily. Avoid using silicones, mineral oil, or petrolatum as your cuticles are already closed and most of the product will just sit on the hair and not penetrate further preventing anything from getting in. You don’t need to use a ton of products every day. Your main focus should be preventing a build-up, so ensure you use a clarifying shampoo ever so often and avoid products whose ingredients coat the hair
